What You Need to Know
On September 15, 2010 the Department of Justice finalized new standards for accessible ATM design. The (ADA) Americans with Disabilities Act 2010 Standards for Accessible Design mandates that all ATMs must meet specific requirements by March 15, 2012. Existing ATMs must be either replaced or upgraded if an upgrade is available. We urge you to not wait and come up with a compliance plan immediately. Whether you have 1 machine or 1000, compliance is mandatory. Failure to comply can leave you vulnerable to litigation as well as DOJ fines and penalties.
What is ATM ADA Compliance?
• Headphone jack with voice guidance for the visually impaired.
• Standardized height and reach requirements.
• Visually discernable user input controls
• Braille instructions
• A clear wheelchair accessible path to the ATM as well as a turning radius in front of the machine.
How will this affect you?
• All terminals must be fully compliant by March 15, 2012.
• Compliance is mandatory.
• If you have multiple machines on site, only one needs to be compliant.
• Machines purchased in the past 5 years are most likely already compliant. If your machine is 5+ years old, you should contact Best Products immediately to see if your machine is compliant and what options are available to you.
• Even if your machine is compliant, you may need to re-position the ATM or modify the layout of your business so you have a clear wheelchair path as well as a turning radius in front of the ATM.
Although ADA compliance is mandatory it doesn’t have to be costly. Contact Best Products today and see what your options are. Well qualified merchants may be able to take advantage of heavily discounted ATMs when they choose Best Products as their ATM solution provider.
